Petrochemicals Market in India 2022

Petrochemicals Market in India 2022

Market insights:
The Indian petrochemicals sector has accomplished significant milestones in terms of capacity expansion and completion rate. The country produces approximately 80,000 types of chemicals and petrochemicals, and the market employs over two million people. Despite the disadvantages in terms of costs, domestic manufacturers spent a lot of revenue in the development of new capabilities in petrochemicals.
It is one of the fastest-expanding industries, with demand increasing at a CAGR of more than 8% in the last five years. In terms of volume, the petrochemicals market was valued at 43.99 Mn tons and in FY 2021 and is expected to reach 54.48 Mn tons in FY 2027 expanding at a CAGR of 2.98% during the FY 2022 – FY 2027 forecast period.

Segment insights:
The petrochemical market is segmented into three divisions – basic petrochemicals, intermediates, and other petro-based chemicals. The basic petrochemicals segment dominated the market, accounting for ~44.66% of the share of the market volume in FY 2021. Basic petrochemicals include polymers, synthetic fibers, synthetic rubber, synthetic detergent intermediates, and performance plastics.
Intermediates was the second-leading segment in FY 2021. Increase in consumption of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), linear low-density polyethylene (LDPE), polypropylene, and polyvinyl chloride is expected to contribute to the growth of the basic petrochemicals segment.
Impact of COVID-19:
The petrochemicals industry witnessed steady growth since the economic crisis of 2008. The growth momentum continued till 2018 owing to factors such as high utilization level of margin growth and capacity addition of petrochemical plants. Petrochemical prices in India increased because a spike in COVID-19 cases and travel restrictions across the country resulted in a drop in the demand from important downstream businesses.
Also, supply chain interruptions and demand contraction resulted in delivery delays, cancellations, and even re-exports. The container shortage in Asia [40-foot dry cargo (DC) containers at Qingdao Port, China] created bottlenecks in many ports including India. Sources in the shipping industry claimed that this was because of the six-day Suez Canal bottleneck in March 2021. This shortage will aggravate during the peak shipping season i.e., August ─ October 2021.
In addition to port warehouses being flooded with imports in the past few months, logistics companies have claimed that the number of warehouse workers is low (not reporting to work) because of an increase in COVID-19 cases. This is affecting trans-loading operations.
