India Gaming Market - Growth, Trends, and Forecasts (2020 - 2025)

India Gaming Market - Growth, Trends, and Forecasts (2020 - 2025)

The Indian gaming market was estimated to be valued at USD 1.89 billion in 2020, and it is expected to reach USD 4.01 billion by 2026, registering a CAGR of 16.22% over the forecast period 2021 – 2026. With one of the world’s largest youth populations, India is expected to become one of the world’s leading market destinations in the gaming industry. The growth in the country is driven by the growing younger population, higher disposable incomes, the introduction of new gaming genres, and the rapidly increasing number of smartphone and tablet users.

  • This has resulted in the country ranking fifth among the world’s top mobile gaming markets, with over 220 million gamers spending an average of 42 minutes per day on mobile games. By 2020, NASSCOM data estimated that the Indian mobile gaming market would reach 628 million users.
  • A key shift in India that the gaming industry is witnessing is that now there is a lot more focus on game development. In the past 2-3 years, more than 200 game development companies have come up, creating their own intellectual properties (IPs) in games. The COVID-19 pandemic, which has resulted in lockdowns, has accelerated online gaming in India. Time spent on games increased dramatically as virtual zones became avenues to socialize, connect, and compete.
  • New gaming ventures are also entering the Indian market. For instance, Paytm First Games, the gaming arm of the digital payment's platform Paytm, started in 2019 and witnessed a 200% increase in its user base during the lockdown. Paytm First Games provides around 300 games, including Fantasy Cricket, Teen Patti, and Rummy. Another start-up, Gameberry Lab, has witnessed significant growth in daily installations and user engagement.
  • Game developers are also continuously striving to enhance the gamer’s experience, and launching new games for diverse console/platforms, such as PlayStation, Xbox, and Windows PC, which are provided to the gamers through these devices.
  • The cloud gaming is an emerging technology across the gaming industry, which allows the user to stream high-end games across hand-held devices, such as laptops, tablets, and mobiles, with fast network connectivity, thereby, eliminating the requirement for regular hardware upgrade or a gaming console/PC/laptop. Such key factors are expected to have a positive impact on the market’s growth.
  • The COVID-19 pandemic is forcing enterprises to move away from desktops to laptops. As per a senior manager of Client Solutions Group, Dell Technologies, India, this shift in adopting desktop computing to notebook PC is more apparent in specific verticals, and more service-oriented and public sector organizations.
Key Market Trends Rapid Increase in Smartphone is expected to drive the market
  • The smartphone penetration in India has increased in the last couple of years owing to the rising penetration of the internet, initiatives taken by the government, and smartphone stakeholders. According to a Cisco report, smartphones will be used by 55% of the total population by 2023, which is growing from 610.9 million in 2018 at a CAGR of 5%. The forecast described that India would be stood at 2.1 billion connected devices by 2023, which was 1.5 billion in 2018.
  • In November 2020, India-based mobile manufacturer Lava Mobiles is now reportedly making handsets for other brands. As per the company, it will be in agreement with Motorola and HMD Global for making Moto and Nokia handsets at its manufacturing facilities. Since Motorola and Nokia smartphones come with the ‘Made in India’ written on their back, they resort to cost-effective methods for ensuring the smooth market reach.
  • In August 2020, Samsung had planned to move part of its smartphone manufacturing to India from Vietnam and several other countries. The South Korean smartphone giant plans to produce devices worth more than USD 40 billion in the country.
  • In June 2020, India launched an INR 500 billion plan to boost electronics manufacturing, saying it will start by offering five smartphone makers incentives to expand or establish domestic production. The government of India is offering a production-linked incentive (PLI) involving cash worth 4% to 6% of additional sales of goods made locally over the next five years, with 2019-2020 as the base year.
  • The smartphone industry has become a major driver for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make In India’ initiative. By taking such initiatives, the government now wants to develop India as an export hub. In October 2020, the government of India had approved incentives under a federal plan to leverage domestic smartphone production to 16 companies, which includes top Apple suppliers Wistron, Foxconn, and Pegatron.
PC Browsers/ Downloaded Games to Dominate Market Share
  • PC Gaming is preferred in the country due to the multipurpose nature of the device, as consumers in the country opt for laptops/PCs that can be used for both gaming and work purposes. With the recent outbreak of COVID-19, the demand for gaming laptops and PCs has seen a positive growth, with several PC brands reporting an increase in laptop sales that can offer a high speed gaming experience.
  • For instance, since the easing of lockdown, ASUS has seen a three-time increase in the sales of gaming laptops compared to pre-COVID-19 time sales, during the same time in the previous year. The company sold over 80% of its recently launched 14-inch Zephyrus G14. According to Asus's management team, during 2019, gaming laptops accounted for 8% of the overall laptop market in the country, with 60,000-80,000 price segment accounting for about 40-45% of the market.
  • Also, MSI, which is another prominent gaming laptop vendor in the country, observed three times increase in social media queries for gaming notebooks and 1.5 times increase in actual sales of gaming notebooks in recent months. As the company mentioned, the consumers are looking for devices that can meet their work, as well as gaming requirements. Owing to such trends, the PC/laptop market is expected to grow at a faster pace in the coming years.
  • Moreover, in August 2020, Lenovo announced that the demand for its personal computers grew by 40-50% during June-August 2020 compared to the same period a year-ago. The company also expects that the contribution of gaming PCs to its consumer segment may double.
  • Also, Acer is looking to expand its gaming laptop and PC offering, owing to the growing demand trend in the country. In January 2020, the company announced that the demand for its gaming PCs was on the rise in the country, driven by the shift from mobile gaming to PC gaming, faster Internet speeds at lower tariffs, and affordable gaming products.
